'The spring bank holiday'

As we are approaching this long weekend!, here is a little about this occasion!:

Spring Bank Holiday in the United Kingdom

The spring bank holiday, also known as the late May bank holiday, is a time for people in the United Kingdom to have a day off work or school. It falls on the last Monday of May but it used to be on the Monday after Pentecost.

Spring Bank Holiday

What Do People Do?

For many people the spring bank holiday is a pleasant day off work or school. Some people choose to take a short trip or vacation. Others use the time to walk in the country, catch up with family and friends, visit garden centers or do home maintenance. However, in some parts of the United Kingdom, there are some customs associated with this day.

On Cooper's Hill in Brockworth, Gloucestershire, people race down a steep hill following a large round cheese. The hill is concave and has an incline of 1:1 in some places. The first person to cross the finishing line wins a Double Gloucester cheese weighing about 8lbs (around 3.5kg).

The custom may have been started by the Romans or ancient Britons and be an ancient fertility rite or a way of guaranteeing the rights of the villagers to graze their livestock on the surrounding land. In some years, there have been a lot of injuries, causing the event to be cancelled a couple of times in recent years. In these years, the cheese was rolled down the hill, but nobody was allowed to chase it.

In Endon in Staffordshire, the villagers dress their well, hold a fayre (village celebration) and crown a girl as the Well Dressing Queen. Local men hold a competition, known as 'Tossing the Sheaf', in which they compete to see who can toss a bale of straw the highest. In other places, boats are blessed, Morris dancers put on displays and local festivals are held.

Warning from Police,

Crime and Safety.

From met police one of our members has contacted us as -- he states that recently there have been a group of people (1 lady & 2 men) that are targeting houses. They are doing this by the lady claiming that she is being followed by two men and is seeking help. This happened to our member's neighbour a couple of days ago along Broadfields.

Luckily the neighbour was smart enough to ask what she needed through the door with the chain latch on the door. His neighbour suggested the lady waits outside whilst he calls the police, however the lady and the two men ran off (the men were waiting at the side of house). When police arrived, they informed them that there had already been 3 other proprieties burgled in a similar fashion recently.

Please All share and RT this post and remind your elderly friends and relatives not to open the door to strangers, no matter how distressed they seem. And if you see any suspicions activity please do report it to the police by calling 101 or 999 if a crime is in action.

You can also report crime via the new police website   Https://beta.met.police.uk

It was also reported that bags & purses had been snatched in New Southgate by the Co-op by somebody on a Moped.

Police Surgery 2016 at FBCL

Dear Ward Member,

This is to make you aware of a recent type of crime slowly affecting motor vehicles with keyless technology. Please ensure that you keep the keys of those vehicles away from the front door of your properties so that they cannot be scanned with an electronic device.

The suspects are using a scanning device that scans the frequency of the car keys and then they copy this to be able to gain access to the vehicle and drive it off. This relates to all vehicles fitted with keyless operating systems from 2010 onwards.

Going forward - Crime prevention tactics include:

- Having secondary means to secure the car ...like Krook Locks on steering wheel or similar devices..
- Car keys should also be kept at the back of the house in a drawer or cupboard so that the key is shielded and out of range.

Kindly find attached a crime prevention leaflet on keyless motor vehicle entry.

Many thanks,

Police Surgery.
